WELCOME TO MIND WORKS
Start where
you are.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
Counselling offers time to explore what is happening, identify what you need and work toward changes at a manageable pace. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, culture-informed, and person-centred.
My frontline experience informs my work, while your own experiences and priorities guide our conversations.
COUNSELLING SUPPORT
Support that considers
the whole person.
Trauma & EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps people work through distressing memories and reduce their emotional impact. It combines brief attention to a memory with guided eye movements, taps or sounds. We begin with preparation and coping skills, then work together at a pace that feels manageable for you.
Frontline experiences
Conversations informed by the realities of frontline work, including occupational stress, burnout and moral injury.
Individual counselling
In-person or virtual counselling to understand your concerns, recognise strengths and develop strategies that fit your life.
Individual counselling is available for adults, youth and children, with in-person and virtual options. In-person couples, family and group appointments are also listed in Jane. Support can address stress, anxiety, relationship concerns and difficult life experiences, as well as trauma and occupational distress.
You do not need to be a first responder or frontline worker to seek support. Discuss your needs and the appropriate appointment before booking.
MEET YOUR COUNSELLOR
Stephanie Jackson
MACP, CCC, RCT-C, PCP

Clinical learning and frontline experience, brought together in a collaborative approach.
My background includes paramedicine in Nova Scotia, military-related service and three decades of educational leadership. Seeing the need for emotional and psychological support in our communities and among first responders and frontline workers led me to pursue counselling psychology. I bring a trauma-informed, culture-informed, and person-centred approach while recognising that you are the expert on your own life.
I am in the research stage of my PhD in Trauma and Crisis Management, focusing on moral injury in Canadian first responders.
We can work together to understand your distress, identify patterns and develop strategies that build on your strengths.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Before your first visit.
Can I attend virtually?
Yes. Individual counselling is available in person in Lake Echo and virtually, including appointment listings for children and youth. Ask about suitability and availability for your needs. The practice is approximately 12 minutes from Dartmouth and 20 minutes from Musquodoboit Harbour.
What happens at the first appointment?
We will get to know you, hear what brings you to counselling and discuss your concerns, goals and preferences. We begin building a working relationship and review consent, confidentiality and practical arrangements. You can ask questions at any point.
What if the fit does not feel right?
The first appointment is an opportunity to decide whether working together feels right. If you would prefer a different therapist, the practice can help you explore a more suitable referral.
How often will we meet?
Many clients begin weekly, then adjust the schedule with their counsellor. Your needs, goals and any insurance or program requirements help guide the frequency. We review these arrangements together.
What is the difference between counselling, psychology and psychiatry?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. Psychologists provide assessment and may offer diagnosis and therapy within their scope. Counselling therapists focus on therapeutic support and helping people work through distress. With your consent, your counsellor can collaborate with other members of your care team.
Will my insurance cover counselling?
Coverage depends on your plan and the provider designation it accepts. The fees and coverage section lists the practice’s insurers and payment options. Confirm your benefits, any referral or authorization requirements, and extended-session coverage before booking.
Are my sessions confidential?
Your counselling information is private, subject to professional and legal limits. Your counsellor explains these during informed consent, including circumstances involving serious safety concerns, protection obligations or legally required disclosure. You can ask questions about confidentiality before sharing information.
How do I book?
Use Book an appointment to access the practice’s existing booking system. A free 15-minute new-client phone or virtual consultation is available. You can also call or email for general appointment enquiries.
Can I request an accommodation?
Please contact the practice before your visit to discuss access or communication needs and which arrangements may be possible. Virtual appointments are also available. Please confirm any physical access requirements for the Lake Echo office before attending.
